Recent Stud Activities
The first group of does has almost finished kidding with only one doe to go.  Next group is due from about the 10th Sept.  The two pictures above are Cadenza CA1PC0180  showing lovely udder structure, and typical good mothering behaviours.  Behaviours include lifting a leg so the kids can get to teats, and secondly smelling the kids "butt" to make sure they are her kids.
Her udder is beautifully shaped being well attached, firm to the body and teats well placed.   This doe had triplets so one of the doe kids is being bottle raised.  But what is quite impressive, is that this doe produced a total weight of 11kgs of kids and is still in absolutely excellent strong condition.  Look how wide she is across the hips.  Not so acceptable in "we humans" but just what we want in our breeding does.  Big productive does, easy to kid, and easy doing.

Mr. Stephanus Malan
Mr. Stephanus Malan. President of the South African Boer Goat Association visits Cadenza Boers and Gippsland. In May, Mr. Stephanus Malan classified all the breeding age Boers at the Cadenza stud.  These days were open to all BGBAA members to see how the assessment was undertaken and to practise their own assessment skills.   Stephanus discussed his assessments and answered any questions of clarification.
Depending on their age, the breeding animals at Cadenza have been assessed a number of times, and the older breeding animals at least five times over the past few years.    Usually the assessments are part of training days but sometimes the focus is just on the classification.    Assessors have included, Stephanus Malan, Kobus Lotter, Theuns Botha, Celia Burnett-Smith, Vicki Mitchell, and Pierre Bouwer.

The does and kids bring themselves home for the night. The kids are now strong and secure, and unless they meet with an accident of some type, will thrive from now on.

Other Stud news: August
Cadenza CA1FD0051  August 2012. Cadenza 51 has just had a healthy, beautiful doe kid so the line is well established.  Unfortunately she kidded at night and the twin buck kid did not survive his head first with no legs presented exit.  Obviously taking too long to give birth to this 4.5 kg kid, amazingly 51 did eventually, and without assistance, push this kid out....a mammoth effort as most does would not have been able to give birth like this.  She is a seriously strong doe! See above for her picture.  So she is not only strong, but also beautiful.  Just the way we like them.

The training

The Stud has been involved in significant training events at the farm.   A number of Breeders Workshops has been held here with the highest qualified presenters available.   In addition the farm has been open for information days and husbandry workshops.   Presently the stud is part of the Department of Primary Industries study of goat production issues, where any deaths are autopsied, mineral levels monitored, worm burdens and drench resistance studies undertaken.  There is a philosophy for the Cadenza Stud that education and training is a responsibility for all good studs and that those with knowledge have a responsibility to offer it to others.   Details of  training days and events will be published on this website as they come to hand.  If you would like to be kept advised of training days please drop us a line at   cadenzaboers@bigpond.com
